I’ve been sober for almost 24 years—but I know I could be Hunter Biden tomorrow because addiction doesn’t go away. It’s arrested daily by not drinking and by attending AA meetings (during the Pink Floyd I’ll see You on the Dark side of the Moon shirt But I will love this pandemic, by Zoom). I don’t think of myself as better than people who can’t get sober, I’m just lucky. For whatever reason, I have been given the gift of sobriety. But the moment I think it’s mine and I’ll never lose it, that’s when I know I’ll be in terrible trouble.

Trump thinks he can win by shaming Joe Biden with his son’s struggles with addiction. But Hunter is just one of millions of Americans who have struggled with addiction and alcoholism. Neither alcoholism nor addiction is a moral failing. It’s not the Pink Floyd I’ll see You on the Dark side of the Moon shirt But I will love this 1940s. We understand that alcoholism is a treatable disease. Which is good, because we live in a country riddled with alcoholism and addiction. When this pandemic is over and we start mourning our dead in person and not over Zoom calls, we will likely be confronted by more loss, more addiction. We will have to find a way to serve these people, and we will start by not shaming them for their genetics.
